Overview Of Places To Visit In Ireland

1. The Loop Head Peninsula

Loop Head Lighthouse is an iconic Clare tourism site, but many visitors overlook the stunning cliffs near it

And that is what really will set them apart. I have gone 5 or so times, and there are almost as many people in the whole place.

Set off from the lighthouse car park – there’s a trail, sometimes muddy that takes you to the white cliffs (listen for hazers).

Follow the track left to a huge sea stack. If you take the right path, this will lead to stunning cliff views over to Kilkee. In our opinion The Loop Head Peninsula is the best places to visit in Ireland.

2. McDermott’s Castle

Lough Key Castle, in Roscommon – one of the more unique castles you’ll come across in Ireland.

One of the famous things about this lake, it stretches around 10 km across (so at least over an hour to swim) and is shaped in a rough circle with more than 30 (I didn’t count!) islands dotted throughout its freezing waters.

One of these islands is called ‘Castle Island’ and this is where you will also find McDermott’s Castle in ruin.

And for more information on how to get to the castle and its sad story, have a look at our guide on McDermott’s Castle at Lough Key.

3. Coumshingaun Lough

Looking for stunning views and a thigh-burner with your day out in Ireland?

Warning: Now, a disclaimer – this is one of the most challenging hikes in Ireland and exceptional navigational skills are required!

The entire trail is between 4 and 6 hours long, and at parts it has dangerous grounds. As you stroll (and scramble!) I mean even without the gates open, there is no way to get extremely close up. like for example, a few more metres and you end at a steep fall down this inky lake which would be your final adventure injury but it did give some pretty sights! In our opinion The Loop Heais the best places to visit in Ireland.

4. Scrabo Tower

Scrabo Tower (Newtownards, Down) was built in the 19th Century and is what we would call a Folly.

A Folly is a purpose-built structure designed to be visually attractive but pointless, although often with an element of architectural fantasy.

It can be found in Scrabo Country Park, and those who make it to the top of the hill are rewarded with views across Strangford Lough and miles around.

5. Ireland’s islands

Ireland has a soaked sea-bound tradition, and it shows in the number of islands along its western coastline too, with Min Jurassic-world-famous places like Skellig Michael And more nearly Moher worth noting.

Good day trip options include Garnish Island in Cork (top) and Arranmore Island in Donegal.

Nonetheless, here are some places in Ireland you simply have to visit before leaving the Emerald Isle and Beautiful Bere Island (Cork), Inishturk island.(Mayo) Saltee Islands(Wexford) — if not already.

6. The Caves of Keash

Well, a lot of what I think are some pretty amazing places to visit in Ireland (especially the best ones) happen to be located on Irelands west coast.

But not many come with as rich a history as the Caves of Keash in County Sligo. These caves are an ancient passage tomb cluster, which we can say to be much older than the Pyramids of Egypt by a whooping 500-800 years!

In the 1900s geological inspections were carried out, which showed how this was an early man site and they lived in these caves at Keash.

It is also known that there are, or at least have been in the past bears, wolves, arctic lemming and other wildlife.

7. Dunmore Cave

Another of the oddly cool places to visit in Ireland, home to Kilkenny – Dunmore Cave.

One 9th-century text identifies it as one of the ‘darkest places in Ireland’ Dunmore Cave: Darker than the depths it is hiding

The 17th-century Annals of the Four Masters — a compilation of mediaeval Irish history — say that in AD 928 more than thousand were killed there by Vikings.

8. Doon Fort

Donegal: Doon Fort — a tiny isolated fort for Michael, the three-stanza poem describes.

Even the fort is associated with two families, Breslin and O’Boyle. The Breslin’s had it since the 5th century, then the O’Boyle’s owned it and let it slip into disrepair.

It is located on private land but people (at least several years ago) have been able to hire boats further along Doon Lake for a better view of the fort.

9. Bull Rock

Well, good chances you might have heard of Dursey Island in Cork (yep, it is that island which takes some lifetime to get on and off ).

Both an island and a tidal island, Dursey Island lies off the southwestern tip of Beara Peninsula in the sprawling territory that is West Cork.

Cow, Bull and Calf Rocks are three rocks lying off the western point of the island. Bull Rock, as depicted above has appeared to be straight out of a Pirates of the Caribbean film

In terms of the sheer singularity, Bull Rock has to rank pretty high on any list of unusual places in Ireland.

10. The Inis Mór Wormhole

Our next stop, though often called the ‘Serpent’s Lair’ or ‘the Wormhole,’ is actually named “Poll na bPeist.”

Another Irish oddity, this particular one is on Inis Mor – the largest of three islands that make up Ireland’s Aran Islands off Galway.

While the finely-cut edges in the above photos make it look as if they were intentionally cut with some huge tool, Wormhole was actually created by nature.
